Chapter 66 - The Consultant's Invitation

Aldén Voss's attorney requested a voluntary conversation with me. The invitation came on expensive letterhead and described my prior TriBeCa work as “potentially material to ongoing corporate questions.”

Miriam read it and laughed without humor. “They don't get to interview you just because you're Adrian's former wife.”

I worried about the city inquiry, but I also knew my old drawings might be misunderstood.

“Can I provide the legitimate project background through counsel?” I asked.

“Possibly. First we clarify what they want and whether their client has a conflict.”

The following day the attorney sent a narrower request: confirmation of the dates I had worked on early designs and whether my review had been included in a later valuation package.

I could answer the first from my records. I couldn't answer the second. I said so through Miriam.

My restraint infuriated me almost as much as the original request. I wanted somebody to admit what had happened. But wanting an answer was not permission to manufacture one.

That evening I returned to the bookstore drawings, where a beam could be measured and a doorway widened. There was mercy in work that admitted the difference between known and unknown.
