Chapter 59 - The Missing Appendix

Owen discovered that a public construction filing referenced an appendix that had not been attached to the version available for review. It was possible the appendix existed in the engineer's complete submission. It was also possible someone had omitted it.
“Don't write a dramatic email,” he warned me. “Just ask the plan examiner whether they received it.”
I did. The examiner confirmed the supporting materials were being requested. That was all we knew.
Three days later, the engineer produced a revised package with additional groundwater monitoring. No emergency stop-work notice was issued. The question had led to more complete documentation, not a scandal.
I felt strangely disappointed for about thirty seconds. Then I recognized the impulse. The world had trained me to expect a villain behind every missing page.

Sometimes a missing appendix meant somebody needed to supply an appendix.
I made the same correction in my bookstore drawings after a reviewer asked for a door schedule I'd forgotten. Good process could be humiliating without being sinister.
