Chapter 72 - The Afternoon Visit

Vanessa visited Leo's school with the evaluator's approval. She arrived without a camera crew, a press release, or a discussion of trust signatures.

Leo showed her a painting of a house with green shutters and a purple roof. He asked whether she was angry with his uncle.

“Sometimes I disagree with him,” she told him. “That isn't your problem to fix.”

Dorothy repeated the conversation to me later because it was the first time she'd heard Vanessa say something so direct.

I thought about how many adults believe silence is gentler than truth. In my marriage, silence had turned into a room nobody could breathe in. Leo didn't need the entire history of the trust. He did need permission not to feel responsible for it.

That night I wrote a note to myself: Children ask whether adults are angry because anger changes the temperature of a room.

I taped it near the crib sketches. It was a reminder, not a parenting doctrine. My baby would surely teach me dozens of things no note could prepare me for.
