Chapter 42 - The Public Record

Miriam helped me find the official permit portal for the TriBeCa work. Owen joined a call to explain the engineering terms without turning them into accusations.

“Public records show the monitoring recommendation was revised,” he said. “They don't prove the project is unsafe. The responsible engineer may have used different safeguards.”

We sent a factual inquiry to the city building office through the ordinary professional channel, identifying the permit, the earlier public submission, and our question about how groundwater risk was addressed. It was not a press leak.

The next day a plan examiner acknowledged receipt and requested further materials from the applicant's engineer.

I didn't tell Adrian. He would learn through the project team when appropriate. For the first time I resisted the urge to make every professional decision into part of our relationship.

The small bookstore was taking shape in my drawings. A widened aisle. A low desk. An alcove where children could sit under a painted tree.

Buildings had always interested me because they gave shape to human behavior. A narrow door told someone they didn't belong. A clear route invited them inside.

I wondered what kind of doorway Adrian would choose to build for Leo.
