Chapter 31 - The Board's Empty Chair

Adrian told me Alden Voss had stepped away from the board's investigation committee, though he remained a director while outside counsel reviewed the access records.

“Was that voluntary?” I asked.

“No,” he admitted. “The independent directors requested it.”

“Good. They should be able to ask questions without you deciding the answers.”

Adrian's voice sharpened. “You think I've been protecting Alden?”

“I think you like systems where the person in charge gets to decide when a problem has been solved.”

He was quiet, then said, “Fair.”

The press was full of speculation about Moretti Capital's upcoming offering. A screenshot of a valuation model had found its way online. Commentators who knew nothing about Leo wrote confidently about family scandals and missing assets.

I closed the article when it mentioned an unnamed child. I sent the link to Miriam instead, with a request that she help keep my pregnancy out of corporate statements.

That evening an unfamiliar number called twice. I didn't answer. The voicemail was from a reporter offering to give me “the chance to tell my side.”

There was no side of the story about an unborn child that strangers were entitled to buy.
