Chapter 50 - The Blue Folder

Miriam placed a blue folder on my desk. Inside was a proposed written communication protocol for Adrian and me: reasonable pregnancy updates, no direct contact with medical providers without my authorization, emergency contact arrangements, and an agreement not to use corporate staff as messengers.
“This isn't a final parenting plan,” she said. “There isn't a child custody order to draw up today. It's a practical way to reduce conflict now.”
Adrian reviewed it with his own family-law attorney. He requested one addition: that if I had a serious medical emergency, an approved contact could notify him once appropriate.
I agreed, provided Elena remained my first emergency contact.
When the finalized document arrived, I looked for hidden traps. There were none I could see. Miriam reviewed it again before I signed.

It wasn't romantic. Adrian and I didn't meet beneath chandeliers or make dramatic promises. We exchanged signatures through counsel and continued living separately.
That evening I put the blue folder on the shelf next to my building drawings. I liked that it was narrow. It occupied only the space it needed.
