Chapter 8 - The Open Door

The ink on the agreement was dry, but the chill in the penthouse hadn't completely lifted.

Adrian capped the silver pen with a soft click and set it down on the mahogany desk. He didn't look back at the paper; his gray eyes remained fixed on me, analytical and searching, as if trying to re-calculate an equation that had suddenly defied all established formulas.

"The flash drive," he reminded quietly, his hand resting near the edge of the desk.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the small black USB drive, and placed it on the desk beside his pen. It clicked softly against the wood—a tiny piece of plastic that had held the entire weight of Moretti Capital’s corporate vulnerability just twenty-four hours ago.

Adrian picked it up, turned it over in his fingers once, and dropped it into his desk drawer, locking it with a small brass key.

"It's done," I said, stepping back from the desk and buttoning my coat. "The files are yours again. The secret is back in your vault."

"It's not a secret anymore, Claire," Adrian said, standing up slowly. "You know. Sarah knows. Marco knows. And Leo..." He paused, a strange, shadow-like expression crossing his features before he masked it behind his usual corporate composure. "Leo is in Vermont. With Vanessa."

I stopped walking toward the study doors. I turned back to look at him. "When was the last time you saw him, Adrian?"

Adrian’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. "I was at the estate two weeks ago."

"Two weeks ago," I repeated. "Before you knew about my pregnancy. Before the board meetings. Before the public offering." I shook my head slowly. "Do you even know what his favorite book is, Adrian? Do you know what he sounds like when he laughs?"

The silence that followed was heavy, laden with the uncomfortable weight of a truth neither of us could easily dismiss. Adrian didn't answer. He didn't have to. The lack of words spoke louder than any corporate defense he could have mounted.

"You built an empire to protect your family," I said softly, my voice carrying no malice, only profound sadness. "But in the process, you built walls so high you couldn't see the people you were supposed to be protecting."

Before Adrian could formulate a reply, the heavy mahogany doors of the study swung open behind me.

Marco Bellini stood in the doorway, looking breathless, holding a tablet in his hand. He stopped when he saw us standing close together, the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife.

"Adrian," Marco said, ignoring the awkward atmosphere. "You need to see this. The morning financial filings just dropped. And... there's a leak."

Adrian’s head snapped up. His eyes flashed with immediate, predatory focus. "A leak? What kind of leak? I thought we secured the server yesterday afternoon."

"It's not the Vane Holdings files," Marco said, stepping further into the room and handing the tablet to Adrian. "It's something worse. Someone just leaked the preliminary valuation numbers for the upcoming TriBeCa acquisition to Bloomberg. The stock is dropping in pre-market trading, and the board is calling an emergency session for noon."

I watched as Adrian took the tablet, his eyes scanning the glowing screen. The color drained from his face for the second time in twenty-four hours, but this time, it wasn't shock—it was pure, unadulterated fury.

"Who?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Who had access to the TriBeCa numbers besides you and me?"

"Nobody," Marco said grimly. "Just us. And... Vanessa."

My breath caught. I took a step closer to the desk. "Vanessa Russo? But she's still in London—or she was supposed to be transferring back."

"She landed in Teterboro Airport an hour ago," Marco said, looking directly at Adrian. "And according to her executive assistant in London, she authorized the file transfer to Bloomberg at 4:00 AM."

Adrian slammed the tablet down onto the mahogany desk. The sharp crack echoed through the vast study like a gunshot.

"She's trying to force my hand," Adrian growled, running a hand through his silver-threaded hair, his composure finally fracturing completely. "With the public offering and the board vote coming up, she wants to crash the valuation so she can leverage her position in the trust and take primary control of Moretti Capital."

"She’s not just coming after your company, Adrian," I said, a cold realization dawning on me as the pieces clicked together. "She’s coming after Leo. If she takes control of the trust, she takes legal guardianship of your nephew."

Adrian looked up at me, his gray eyes locking onto mine with sudden, startling clarity. All the corporate armor, all the emotional detachment, all the cold distance vanished, leaving behind a desperate, raw panic.

"If she gets custody of Leo," Adrian said, his voice tightening, "she controls everything. The trust, the estate, the board votes. She will use him as a weapon against me."

"Then we don't let her," I said, stepping forward, the signed agreement on the desk forgotten as a new, much larger battle line was drawn.

Adrian stared at me, surprised by the fierce, unwavering resolve in my eyes. "You want to help me fight Vanessa?"

"I'm not fighting for your company, Adrian," I said, my voice cutting through the panic in the room. "I'm fighting to make sure my child never has to grow up in a world where family is treated like collateral damage. Where is Vanessa staying right now?"

Marco checked his tablet. "Her private suite at the Plaza. She scheduled a press conference for twelve-thirty to address the 'restructuring' of Moretti assets."

I looked at Adrian, then down at my coat.

"Then we have two hours," I said, pulling my gloves out of my pocket. "Let's go meet your former fiancée."
