Chapter 29 - The Unopened Box

The only thing I'd brought from the penthouse that I hadn't unpacked was a narrow cedar box of photographs. I found it under my bed while searching for an old drafting ruler.
There were pictures from the architectural exhibition where Adrian had first approached me. He wore a dark suit and asked more intelligent questions about circulation space than any other visitor. I had mistaken attention for an ability to listen.
Beneath the photographs lay a note he had written before our wedding: I want to build something with you, not around you.
I sat on the bedroom floor reading it. The sentence was beautiful. It was also a promise he hadn't understood how to keep.
Elena arrived with groceries and found me surrounded by pictures. She lowered herself beside me without asking what I was doing.
“I can still remember loving him,” I admitted.
“Of course you can.”
“Does that make me weak?”
May you like
“No. It makes your marriage real, even though it was wrong for you.”
We ate dinner from paper cartons on the floor. Later I put the photos back in the box, but I left the old note on my desk. It was useful to remember that words could sound generous while still requiring proof.
