Chapter 36 - The Letter From the Protector

The trust protector's letter arrived on cream paper and contained none of the menace of the documents I'd seen at the Plaza.
Her name was Margaret Ashford. She had served as an independent fiduciary for decades and had known Elena Moretti before the plane crash.
She acknowledged the disputed asset transfer and requested a complete accounting from both Adrian and Vanessa. She also asked for a statement from Dorothy about Leo's current care, separate from the lawyers' descriptions.
“What if they disagree?” Adrian asked Noah.
“Then she considers the documents and recommendations. If necessary, the court settles the dispute.”
“That's too slow.”
“It's designed to prevent exactly the kind of unilateral control everyone is accusing everyone else of seeking.”
I was at Miriam's office when Noah said it. Adrian looked at me across the video screen and, surprisingly, didn't ask me to back him up.

After the call, Miriam said Margaret's letter had another significance. The protector had required each participant to disclose relevant conflicts. That included the company's proposed transactions involving trust assets.
For the first time, the conversation about Leo's future began with a request for transparency rather than a demand for obedience.
