Chapter 56 - The Sidewalk Interview

A reporter caught me outside the bookstore as I was carrying a tube of drawings to the subway.
“Ms. Bennett, did Moretti Capital conceal a minor beneficiary to improve its offering valuation?”
I stopped because walking faster would look like an answer and because I wasn't willing to be chased through traffic while pregnant.
“I won't discuss a child,” I said. “Questions about company filings should go to the company and the regulators.”
“Are you and Mr. Moretti reconciled?”
“No.”
“Are you expecting his baby?”
I looked directly at the camera. “My medical information is private. Please step aside.”
He did. Another reporter shouted a question from behind a parked car, but I was already moving toward the subway entrance.
Later Miriam told me the clip had circulated. My answer had been repeated almost exactly. Nothing in it confirmed Leo's identity or my prenatal details.
Elena arrived with soup and a fierce expression. “Do you want me to yell at somebody?”
May you like
“No,” I said. “I want to eat lunch and finish a drawing.”
She set down the container. “That's considerably harder, but I'll help.”
